Law Firm Marketing is a strategic marketing approach designed to take your law firm business plan to the next level. If you’re new to online marketing, it’s difficult to grasp the ins and outs of online attorney advertising. So I’ll explain what you need in order to create the best law firm websites.

I’ve been working in the online marketing industry since 1994 and was the Marketing Director for Lawinfo.com in 2007. I generated over $100K per month income for Lawinfo.com and have been recognized by the company as a top marketing expert in the law industry.

That said, let’s talk about your Law Firm SEO and Law Firm Web site Design. The old method of designing web sites was using HTML code, which created static web pages. The modern day approach is using a CMS (content management system) like WordPress, which can deliver dynamic pages via its advanced CMS delivery system. WordPress is considered the #1 used CMS system in the world today and for good reasons. This enables better SEO in the hands of a marketing professional. This is critical since most business owners claim they know their own product and service better than anyone else, even a marketing expert.

So let’s take a quick example of a business that knows their own matters better than anyone else. An East Coast PEN company has a Brick and Mortar establishment for 30 years and they have never been online until now. The reason they want to get online is to market their revolutionary New PEN called the XyZ-Turbo Pen! The XyZ-Turbo Pen is the first indestructible pen that never goes dry or runs out of ink and will last forever–it’s even guaranteed! “It will sell like hot cakes online”, the owner said. So they build their first web site and begin marketing the indestructible XyZ-Turbo Pen. A month goes by, and then two months go by, and almost no sales are made! So what was the critical error they made in their online marketing attempt? First off, they claimed they knew what people wanted, and, second, they didn’t do any research on their target market. If they had done any market research, they would have found that consumers and businesses are actually searching for ball point pens, red pen, black pen, red fountain pen, fountain pen, black pen or blue pen, blue pen, and ballpoint pen. If they had taken this research and marketed these keyword phrases, they could have introduced the XyZ-Turbo Pen as an upsell and would have laser-targeted exactly what consumers are searching for.

Similarly, in the Law Industry, lawyers have their own vocabulary, and laymen or consumers use their version of the legal language when searching for a specialized attorney. In fact, you probably landed in this specific page for a keyword search term you used in a search engine to find this article proving my point that knowing what your target audience is searching for is critical to getting your target audience to visit your web site and specific web page with the content associated to the search. This requires a full knowledge of retrieving the research data, then importing the data into a database for reviewing, sorting and sifting the data. I’ve personally created a proprietary database for just this purpose, which I use for every niche market when I need to deliver a marketing campaign for organic marketing or PPC (Pay per Click) marketing. The data I collect consists of three fields: the keyword phrase being searched, the daily requests for that keyword phrase, and the estimated cost per click when used in a PPC campaign. These values are also critical to evaluate which Keyword phrase will generate the most traffic organically and in a PPC campaign. So how is this research used? It’s used in conjunction with each web page of content being created in your CMS system. If you are not familiar with dynamic content or the CMS of WordPress, then you can contact me for your marketing needs.

What is the ultimate goal of a Law Firm? It’s to acquire attorney leads. Lawyer leads are the fountain of life for your business. Without these leads and phone calls you won’t be in business on your own very long.

By creating the correct content and matching the content to the laser targeted keyword research you’ll generate literally tons of listings with the search engines. If you have a brand new or a very old web site that just hasn’t done anything for you, and the only leads you get are when you hand out a business card, then you need to implement the targeted approach of a Law marketing expert.

The old saying from the Movie Field of Dreams, “Build it and they will come” is a dream. Building your site is just Phase 1 of the marketing required. Next, you’ll need your site to become popular with other web sites that have authority with the search engines. This is like the art of baking a soufflé: just because you have the recipe does not mean you can make a soufflé successfully. These in-bound linking campaigns cannot be out-sourced to 3rd world marketing companies just because their services are cheap. The old saying is you get what you paid for. As an example, if you’ve been accused of a traffic violation as in a DUI or DWI, who would you prefer to represent you: the public defender or an experienced and proven successful DUI/DWI attorney?

Yet some third party marketing companies are charging clients outrageous fees that are $5000 per month and up for outsourced marketing services, whether they produce results or not. Most of the time, these people don’t have the skills or knowledge required to deliver a successful marketing campaign.

My latest project was to produce a web site for a client in the law industry and also deliver the law firm’s SEO. This new site is already successfully ranking and will continue to rank hundreds of additional keyword phrases in their niche market.

As a seasoned Web and eCommerce developer going back to 2004 developing traditional stand alone shopping carts, I’ve found many shopping carts that I really liked, but have not found many that actually integrate with WordPress Themes. There has been a lot of demand for this kind of functionality and integration. WooCommerce has certainly been well published and become a seemingly household name online. I’ve tested two other WordPress eCommerce solutions (lower costing not worth mentioning) however both that I tested did not pass the working or consumer testing for user interface design or functionality and lacked various payment methods widely available with other eCommerce solutions.

Since I’ve had many inquiries for WooCommerce work, and seeing the clients have all required viewing a real live working sample of WooCommerce that I have built, I developed this WooCommerce project.  So here’s a real working WordPress Theme with a Woo shopping cart solution AdMediaAuthority.com

AdMediaAuthority.com uses the WooCommerce Canvas Theme and the Fashionable child Theme it also uses the Dwolla payment extension and PayPal Digital Goods gateway. The total cost for these 4 components was a little over $300. A small investment for an off the shelf eCommerce solution. I also reviewed Dwolla to see which shopping carts they integrated with.

One thing I recommend is to see if a company offers a Support Forum for easy lookup of past issues or fixes to their product line. While their site is not always clearly defined the support questions are not in a Forum but in an email TICKET system here: http://www.woothemes.com/contact-us/

I didn’t know this at first but WooCommerce and Woo Themes are located in South Africa, that said; support takes 2-5 days to get responses and they do lose your support tickets or they ask you to reissue your support questions. The shopping cart could have been built and finished in less than a week, but due to poor support and believe it or not, I encountered a “Lost in Translation” issue on a few tickets. It’s best to ask questions and supply as many screen grabs so the support team can get a good understanding of your issue. I still have one support issue for customization unanswered after 10 days. Currently, the shopping cart has been launched taking 2 ½ weeks from start to finish. Most of the wait time is really based on tech support. Also take into consideration if you are in the USA the Time Zone difference, as it is an added delay. So when estimating the completion of a WooCommerce shopping cart and Theme estimate it 3x your normal time.

Speaking of Theme compatibility, I first installed WooCommerce on a full blown Magazine Theme but the Plugin kept getting errors so their shopping cart even though they claim is full compatible with other themes, it’s not! This requires you to purchase a WooCommerce Theme, their selection is not very pretty or elegant, but I gave it a shot anyway. After reviewing the few of their themes available their Child Theme Fashionable seemed to have the best elegant look to it. Now normally a Child Theme is an add-on to a main Theme and is only used for customization. Well after the purchase of this child theme I was also required to purchase the Canvas Theme as it was the main Theme. A little confusing but that’s the requirement to get Fashionable to work.

The installation is straight forward with no issues, install WordPress, then Canvas and Fashionable and the Dwolla payment system. Once you’ve installed these 3 items you’ll be prompted to also install the shopping cart plugin, WooDojo, WooSideBars, WooThemes Helper, and Regenerate Thumbnails. After all this is installed you should have a working environment to begin populating your shopping cart through the Add Products Menu.

I also recommend adding a Backup Plugin right away and doing a daily cron job backups, after hours, so that you have a fail safe backup if you need one.

There are always after market Video Tutorials that have been produced by other online developers and produced from a product user point of view, which I find to be better than the tutorials from WooCommerce.

Tens of thousands of software engineers have reached a settlement with major tech companies including Apple, Google, Intel and Adobe in a high-profile class-action lawsuit over poaching and lost wages.
The terms of the deal will remain confidential until it’s presented to a U.S. District Court judge on May 27, said Kelly Dermody, the lawyer representing the engineers.

“This is an excellent resolution of the case that will benefit class members,” Dermody, of the firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann and Bernstein, said in a statement. “We look forward to presenting it to the Court and making the terms available.”

E-mails exchanged between Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and other Silicon Valley execs allegedly showed Jobs pressuring other firms not to poach one another’s employees — which, according to the plaintiffs, put downward pressure on their salaries. (Jobs died in 2011.) The more than 64,000 software workers were seeking as much as $3 billion in damages. Under antitrust law, that figure would have been tripled if the case went to trial and the judge ruled in the engineers’ favor.

Last year, other settlements in the antitrust case involving Lucasfilm, Pixar and Intuit came to a total of $20 million.

Update: Reuters is reporting that the settlement is valued at $324 million, total.
